1. PURPOSE / DESCRIPTION 1.1 To determine break away torque of a gear mounted to a shaft 2. Set Up 2.1 Gather necessary components for set up 2.1.1 LOCTITE 770- Primer 2.1.2 LOCTITE 435- Adhesive 2.1.3 Shaft of interest 2.1.3.1 Ensure that the ends are chamfered or consistent diameter 2.1.4 Gear of interest 2.1.5 Disposable towel 2.2 Apply LOCTITE 770 Primer liberally to the inside of the gear of interest and the length of the gear’s area on the shaft of interest. Make sure that Primer is applied at least 25% beyond the ends of where the gear will be placed. See Figure A and B 2.3 Apply a moderate amount of LOCTITE 435 to the same area on the shaft of interest. PROCEDURE 3.1 Measure OD of Shaft and record 3.2 Measure ID of gear and record. Use pin gages as required 3.3 Clean shaft and gear mating surfaces with Loctite 770 Primer 3.4 Apply Loctite 435 to both the shaft and the gear mating surfaces 3.5 Press the gear onto the shaft and wait 24 hours 3.6 Mark the gear and shaft to note the starting position 3.7 Clamp the shaft in the bench vise 3.8 Attach the drill chuck to the gear as shown in figure 1. Make sure the gear is seated properly within the chuck.
